TSM Tips: When and How to Adjust Your Expense Inputs
Life is full of surprises — unexpected expenses, seasonal costs, or even life changes that impact your financial plan. With The Shred Method™, you have multiple ways to account for these fluctuations and keep your plan on track.
Here’s how:
âś… Option 1: Add a Household Expense
If you anticipate a recurring or seasonal expense, the best approach is to add it as a Household Expense under the “Edit Financial” tab.
-
Enter the average amount you expect to spend.
-
If it’s a one-time or seasonal expense, you can add an End Date to let the software know when to stop accounting for it.
-
Recalculate your plan after adding the expense. This ensures that the software adjusts accordingly to keep you on the safe side for covering that expense.
By entering it this way, the software will automatically adjust your plan to account for that expense without disrupting the rest of your strategy.
âś… Option 2: Modify the Consolidated Transaction
If your expenses are consolidated under a credit card, and you notice a spike in spending:
-
Go to your Consolidated Transaction (Credit Card) and update the actual amount.
-
Transact and reconcile to let the software know the expenses were higher this month.
The software will then adjust the plan to cover that higher expense while still aiming to shred effectively.
âś… Option 3: Add a One-Time Transaction
If you know about a specific upcoming expense, you can add it as a Non-Recurring Expense:
-
Go to the “Edit Financial” tab.
-
Add a One-Time Transaction and set the amount.
-
You can also modify the date to reflect when that expense is coming up.
This way, the software can adjust its calculations to keep you on track and ensure you’re prepared for that extra cost.
