TSM Tips: Keeping the Balance of Your Shred Account Accurate
One of the key components that makes The Shred Method effective is the accuracy of the information you input — and this is especially true when it comes to your Shred Account.
Your Shred Account (whether it's a HELOC, Line of Credit, or even a Checking Account) is the engine of your Shred Plan. However, you might notice at times that the balance shown in the software doesn't quite match your actual balance in real life.
So… Why does that happen?
Discrepancies can happen for a number of reasons:
-
Your minimum payment might vary
-
Your account may or may not be interest-only
-
Your payment might be set to autopay from a separate checking account
-
Or maybe a transaction hasn't cleared in your actual account yet
Whatever the cause, it’s totally normal for the balance to drift slightly over time.
âś… What to do about it:
To keep things on track, here’s our simple recommendation:
-
Reconcile your actions as usual within the software.
-
Go to the "Edit Financial" tab.
-
Check if the balance shown for your Shred Account matches what you see in real life.
-
Be sure to factor in pending actions — for example, if your transfer hasn’t cleared yet, don’t expect the software to reflect that until it does.
-
If everything should have cleared, but the balance still doesn’t match — go ahead and manually update the balance.
-
Once you’ve adjusted the balance, hit "Reconcile" again to update your plan.
📌 Why this matters:
Making sure the software has the most accurate, up-to-date balance allows it to give you the smartest guidance possible — and ensures you’re staying on course toward your financial goals.

We want to ask you a favor, we're currently trying to build a database of HELOC providers to help new members find a lender wherever they may be based. We would greatly appreciate it if you could fill out this form based on your HELOC provider.
