TSM Tips: Consolidation of Expenses
One of the smartest ways to optimize your financial strategy with The Shred Method is by consolidating expenses. Why? Because it makes it easier to move money efficiently out of your HELOC while keeping things simple and organized.
Why Consolidate Expenses?
Consolidating your expenses allows you to make fewer withdrawals from your HELOC, which helps streamline your cash flow management. Instead of multiple small transactions, you can make one single pull from your HELOC per month to cover all necessary expenses. Here’s how:
-
Credit Card Strategy: Use a credit card for most of your monthly expenses. Then, pull from your HELOC once per month to pay off your credit card balance by its due date.
-
Checking Account Strategy: Withdraw from your HELOC just once per month to deposit enough into your checking account to cover all monthly expenses that need to be paid directly.
-
Keep It Simple: Adam’s original goal was to write no more than 3 checks or make 3 bill payments per month—this keeps everything clean and efficient.
How to Set This Up in The Shred Method Software
There are two ways to account for consolidated expenses in the software:
Option 1: Use "Consumer Debts & Household Expenses Consolidation"
-
Add all your divided expenses under the Household Expenses section.
-
Use the "Consumer Debts & Household Expenses Consolidation" feature to create a consolidated payment method.
-
If using a credit card, add the name of the credit card.
-
Check all expenses that are paid with that credit card.
-
In the "Day of the Month" field, enter the due date of the credit card.
Option 2: Add a Single Consolidated Expense
-
Instead of listing every individual expense, create a single expense called something like "Chase CC" (or whatever card you use most).
-
Enter the average amount needed each month to pay off the credit card.
-
In the "Day of the Month" field, enter the due date of the credit card.
-
If consolidating via a checking account instead, enter the date when you need those funds available to cover all necessary payments.
-
Important: If you still have household expenses listed individually, delete them once they are accounted for under the consolidated method.
